Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero is reportedly keen to cancel his current contract with the Premier League club to move to Major League Soccer (MLS).
The 33-year-old has fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford following the return of Sheffield United loanee Dean Henderson.
David De Gea remains first choice under manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, leaving little room for Romero to get game time.
According to the Daily Mail, Romero wants to be released from his contract with the club immediately.
The player is so desperate to leave that it’s understood he would be willing to move to a different club even without United’s £1.5 million compensation fee.
The Argentinian shot-stopper was close to a deadline day switch to Everton, where he would rival Jordan Pickford for the number one jersey.
However, the Red Devils rejected Everton's loan offer and instead asked for a transfer fee. This is thought to be what initially started Romero’s anger towards the club.
Romero’s wife took to social media to say: “It is a very sad day because he desired the chance to go to another club.
“He has worked hard every day for this because he gives his all for United and I think that his chances of playing for United have gone down.
“This doesn’t sound right to me. It doesn’t appear honest or professional or serious that they have to let him go. I am very sad because of this.”
Romero joined the Manchester club from Sampdoria in July 2015, after spending a season on loan in Ligue 1 with Monaco.
However, during his five years at Old Trafford he’s only made 61 appearances as he’s had to resort to the bench.
The summer transfer window was seen as the perfect opportunity for Romero to leave the club, which would allow Henderson to compete with De Gea.
However, that hasn’t happened and now he may to have until January for a move. In the meantime, the player will likely ask for his contract to be terminated so he can pursue a move to the MLS.
