AHMEDABAD: Imagine ferrying 100 liters of liquid on a two wheeler! A bootlegger tipped the balance against him when he made the adventurous move to ferry a good 125 bottles of 750 ml of IMFL each on his gearless scooter. The overloaded bootlegger apparently was too conspicuous on the road with his bulging stock and was apprehended by the cops at the Gujarat-Rajasthan border.
The cops were surprised to find every nook and corner of the scooter loaded with liquor. The accused confessed that due to growing demand, he had stashed liquor bottles wherever he could on the scooter.
According to the FIR filed at Pathawada police station in Banaskantha district on Sunday, Bharat Jadhav, 35, a resident of Sabarmati, was caught with 125 750-ml liquor bottles worth a total of Rs 46,000 while he was crossing the border at the Gundi village check post. This roughly calculates 93 liters of alcohol, plus the weight of glass bottles.
Liquor was meant for customers in city
An aide of his, Dharmesh Sikarwar, a resident of Sabarmati, too was caught with another scooter with 50 bottles, worth Rs 23,000. Sources in Banaskantha police said Sikarwar was caught first followed by Jadhav, who was trailing a kilometre behind.
The FIR says Jadhav initially told the cops that he did not know anything about the liquor and was just carrying the consignment to deliver it in Ahmedabad.
Head constable with Panthawada police, Agji Chaudhari, who is investigating the officer of the case, said Jadhav had put some of the bottles in a large sack that he balanced on the scooter's footrest area. More bottles were in another sack that he had slung from his shoulder and a few bottles were in the glovebox. Jadhav also had four bottles inside his pants. Jadhav later told the cops that some desperate customers in Ahmedabad had been demanding liquor from him for a long time. He earlier used to smuggle liquor using a truck or other big vehicle, but tried using a scooter this time as he thought the police would not flag down scooter riders.
Police booked Jadhav and Sikarwar under the Gujarat Prohibition Act and began an inquiry.
