As it happened: ASX misses 6200, but gains 1%

  • The ASX200 closed 1 per cent higher at 6196 points, but did get over the 6200 level for the first time since March during the session. Seventh-day in a row of gains. 
  • Financials and tech were strong. Telstra also jumped, adding 3.2%. Afterpay was up 3.3% and set a new record high $96.08
  • Johnson & Johnson is the latest pharma giant to call a halt to its COVID-19 vaccine study owing to a participant's illness
  • US futures are turning negative in early afternoon, down 0.3%. Hong Kong's stockmarket is closed due to a typhoon
