New Delhi: India’s test positivity rate for Covid-19 has fallen to 5.1 per cent — the lowest in the last four months.

This dip in positivity rate is encouraging as it comes on a day when the number of new Covid cases fell below the 60,000-mark for the first time in almost two months.

The number of deaths in the last 24 hours also dipped to the lowest since 27 July.

Active cases

The number of active cases saw a significant dip in the last 24 hours with a total of 8,38,729 cases in the country presently active, which is 23,124 fewer cases than Monday. The active case count in India has been on a decline for over three weeks now.

Number of deaths

In the last 24 hours, India has registered 706 Covid deaths. The number of daily deaths has been declining for over a week now but this is the lowest number of deaths India has recorded in 24 hours since 27 July.

The total number of reported deaths from Covid-19 in India now stands at 1,09,856.

Mortality rate

Punjab continues to have the highest case fatality rate in the country, which has increased to 3.10. Maharashtra and Gujarat continue reporting high CFR — 2.64 and 2.34, respectively.

Kerala, the state which has the third-highest number of active cases in India, has a very low CFR of 0.35. India’s overall CFR is now about 1.53.

Daily tests

A total of 10,73,014 tests were conducted in the 1,101 government and 768 private labs across the country in the past 24 hours. The total number of tests done till date stands at 8,89,45,107.

Positivity rate

The test positivity rate dropped to 5.1 per cent in the last 24 hours. This is the lowest positivity rate in the past four months. The overall test positivity rate, calculated since the beginning of the pandemic, is 8 per cent.

Recovered cases

A total of 77,760 Covid-19 patients were discharged in the last 24 hours, which brought the recovery rate to about 86.78 per cent, a slight increase from 86.36 per cent Monday. As many as 62,27,295 Covid-19 patients have recovered from the infection in India over the course of the pandemic — which is the highest number of recoveries in the world.

So far, India has recorded a total of 71,75,880 cases of Covid-19. A total of 55,342 new cases were reported in the last 24 hours. This is the first time the daily case count has dropped below the 60,000-mark in 57 days.

High-burden states

In Maharashtra, the total cases of Covid stands at 15,35,315 with 7,089 new cases registered in the last 24 hours. The state has seen 40,514 deaths so far, with 165 deaths in the last 24 hours. The state has the highest number of active cases — 2,12,905.

Karnataka, which has the second-highest burden of active cases in India, registered 7,606 fresh cases in the last 24 hours. This brought the total number of cases to 7,17,915, of which 1,15,795 are active. As many as 70 people have died from Covid in the state in the last 24 hours, bringing the total death toll to 10,036.

Tamil Nadu has 43,747 active cases of Covid-19, with 4,879 new cases in the last 24 hours. A total of 62 people died in the state in the last 24 hours. The total number of Covid cases in Tamil Nadu, so far, is 6,61,264 and 10,314 people have died in the state.

Andhra Pradesh reported 3,224 new cases in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of cases to 7,58,951. With 32 deaths in the last 24 hours, the state’s death toll now stands at 6,256.

Uttar Pradesh reported 3,348 new cases and 41 deaths in the last 24 hours. The state currently has 38,815 active cases, while the total number of confirmed cases in the state stands at 4,39,161. The state’s death toll stands at 6,438.

Tests and positive cases

Maharashtra’s test positivity rate reduced to 11.3 per cent Tuesday. This is an improvement from the past week when the state’s TPR was above 15 per cent. A TPR of above 10 per cent indicates that the state is not conducting enough tests.

Uttar Pradesh conducted over 1.72 lakh tests and reported 3,348 positive cases — which reduced its test positivity rate to 1.5 per cent.
