CHENNAI: DMK executive committee member Dhanasekaran, 56, was attacked with a sword on Tuesday by the estranged husband of a woman working as a computer operator at his home cum office in Chennai’s KK Nagar when he tried to prevent the latter from attacking her.
Police said the incident happened around 3.30pm. Dhanasekar was admitted to a private hospital in Vadapalani. His condition was stable, police said.
Dhanasekar, who lives alone, came out of his house after his staff, Amutha, screamed for help. Dhanasekar told police that he had seen Amutha’s husband, Ponnuvel, 44, and another man arguing with her in front of his house.
When Ponnuvel attacked Amutha with a sword, Dhanasekar came to her rescue. Ponnuvel attacked Dhanasekaran too. Dhanasekaran and Amutha suffered deep wounds on their head and hands.
Ponnuvel and his friend fled the scene.
On being alerted by residents, the K K Nagar police arrived at the spot and sent Dhanasekaran and Amutha to hospital.
K K Nagar police inspector Sivakumar said preliminary inquiries revealed that Amutha had been staying in a women's’ hostel for the past four years. However, during the Covid-19 lockdown, Amutha moved to Dhanasekaran’s house cum office. Irked over this, Ponnuvel and his friend visited Dhanasekaran’s house on Tuesday and attacked her.
The K K Nagar police registered an attempted to murder case and launched a search for Ponnuvel and his friend.
