Coronavirus LIVE: India has lowest per million Covid-19 deaths, says govt

With focussed strategies and calibrated measures, India has sustained its global position of being the country with one of the lowest Covid-19 cases per million and reported deaths per million, the Union Health Ministry said on Tuesday.

From the last five weeks, there has been a continuous decline in the average daily new cases.

"The weekly average of daily new cases fell from 92,830 cases in the 2nd week of September to 70,114 cases in the 2nd week of October," the ministry said.

Coronavirus update: India on Monday witnessed a major drop of  54,265  new Covid-19 cases, taking the tally to 7,175,880 and the death toll reached 109,917. For the fifth day in a row, the number of active Covid-19 cases remained below 900,000.

Coronavirus vaccine update: Johnson & Johnson said it had temporarily halted its Covid-19 vaccine trial because one of its participants had become sick. "We have temporarily paused further dosing in all our Covid-19 vaccine candidate clinical trials, including the  Phase 3 ENSEMBLE trial, due to an unexplained illness in a study participant," the company said in a statement.
 

World coronavirus update: The global tally of coronavirus cases stands at 38,029,249. While 28,587,949 have recovered, 1,085,092 have died so far. The US, the worst-hit country, has 8,037,789 cases. It is followed by India, which has 7,175,880 cases, Brazil (5,103,408) and Russia (1,312,310).
