At 4.3/lakh, Jharkhand murder rate highest in country: NCRB

Ranchi: Jharkhand has the highest murder rate in the country with 4.3 murders per one lakh population, figures for 2019 from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) revealed. The state also recorded the highest number of murders with the motive of gain.
The state saw as many as 1,626 murders in 2019, while Bihar recorded 3,332 and Uttar Pradesh 3,895 murders. But with a projected population of 3.75 crore in mid-2019, the murder rate in the state was the highest.
The data further revealed that a total of 871 murders for gain took place in Jharkhand. Bihar, which ranked second in this category, registered 519 such murders.
Jharkhand saw 2002 murders owing to personal vendetta, 66 for family disputes, 12 for land quarrels, 32 for monetary disputes, 29 for illicit relationships, 52 for love affairs, 35 for dowry, 12 due to extremism and six because of political reasons.
Commenting on the issue, human rights activist Vasavi Kiro said, “Land disputes resulted in many deaths, especially in rural Jharkhand. Several areas in the state are inaccessible, leading to limited administrative interventions. A competent team of administrative officers is required to maintain the law and order situation.”
When questioned, Jharkhand police spokesperson Suman Gupta said she would first go through the data before making any comment.
