The most affordable form of motorised transport is the two-wheeler, and India is easily the largest manufacturing base as well as market for petrol-run scooters and motorcycles. And the advent of electric two-wheelers, the lead segment in the emerging electric mobility market, has just begun. In FY2019, over 3 million (3,09,15,420) units were produced – while 2.6 million units 2,62,67,783 sold last fiscal, 46,29,054 two-wheelers were also exported.
However, FY2020 opened on a difficult note and the Covid-induced lack of demand has impacted all of India Auto Inc. In the April-August 2020 period, production is down 52% YoY to 45,72,221 units and sales down 48% to 41,34,132 units. Exports paint a similar story at 774,845 units, down 48% year on year.
But the resilient Indian two-wheeler industry is fighting back and how. September 2020 numbers are considerably improved over August and OEMs are betting big on the upcoming festive season to deliver the goods. In sync with the passenger vehicle industry, the two-wheeler industry is clearly leading the revival at India Auto Inc.
