Lime Cordiale dominates ARIA award nominations

Sydney pop rock duo Lime Cordiale may want to consider changing the title of their sophomore album from 14 Steps to a Better You to 14 Steps to ARIA Domination.

Debuting at number one on the charts after it was released in July, the record has bagged the two brothers, Oli and Louis Leimbach, from Sydney's Northern Beaches eight ARIA nominations including album of the year, best group, breakthrough artist, best pop release and the song of the year award for the album's first single Robbery.

Oli and Louis Leimbach from Lime Cordiale have scored eight ARIA nominations.

They are one nomination ahead of Tame Impala, whose fourth studio album The Slow Rush has earned them seven nominations, album of the year among them.

Sampa the Great scored six nominations, including album of the year for The Return, best female artist, best hip hop release and best independent release. She missed out on a nod for song of the year, which is determined by public vote.

Last year, Tones and I took home four trophies including best pop release for her record-smashing hit Dance Monkey. This year she has been nominated three times, including for song of the year for her follow-up hit Never Seen the Rain.

In a year where the music industry has been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic, with thousands of gigs cancelled and many artists pushing back album releases, it is the breakthrough artists who have really dominated in the awards.

Breakthrough artist Miiesha has earned five nominations.

Of the five nominees in the breakthrough artist category, four have multiple nominations, including Lime Cordiale, Sydney rapper The Kid Laroi (three nominations) and Brisbane pop singer Mallrat (two nominations). Anangu and Torres Strait Islander singer Miiesha can count a nomination in that category among five she received for her debut album Nyaaringu. She has also earned a nomination for best female artist and will compete against previous ARIA winners Sampa the Great, Amy Shark, Tones and I and Sia.

This year's ARIA Awards will take place at Sydney's The Star on November 25 and be broadcast on Nine (the owner of this masthead). COVID-19 restrictions mean the awards will take place without a live audience for the first time, however a number of performances will go ahead. For the first time in close to a decade the Fine Arts and Artisan Awards, which cover categories like best cover art and best jazz album, will be awarded during the main ceremony.
