MPCC Spokesman Gopal Tiwari lambasts I&B Minister over TRP Scam

Pune, Oct 13 ( UNI) Gopal Tiwari, State Spokesperson of Congress party, has lambasted the Information and Broadcasting Minister Mr Prakash Jawadekar over the devastating multi-crore television news channel TRP scam.
Mr Tiwari talking to reporters here today has dashed off a letter to the I&B Minister demanding to know as to how the minister could have remained in the dark about a scam of such large proportions.
He congratulated the ‘Mumbai police’, whose diligent and effective action resulted in busting the scam and arrests of people involved in it. In his letter to the I&B Minister, Mr Tiwari said it was the duty of the I&B Ministry and the Minister concerned to ensure that no such scam takes place.
However, he alleged, instead of having taken timely action, the central government was trying to hush it up.
He said, incidents of ‘television news channels’ taking arbitrary, high handed and biased stands have increased ever since Modi Government came to the power and the tendency to fan sentiments and damaging the social fabric has also risen.
Mr Tiwari added, these news channels were acting as subservient of the central government by diverting the discourse from the burning issues faced by the Country and its people by raising subjects that suited them in aggressive manner and broadcasting biased and repelling coverage of news.
He went on to point out that incidents of such TV channels violating the ‘spirit of journalism’ by conducting “media trials” on the subjects that suited them, obstructing functioning of the judicial, police and administrative systems, building political motivated suitable “Narratives” and using them to extort huge amounts from major companies and advertisers. The lauded the ‘Mumbai police Commissionar’ for exposing this. He added that ‘Republic TV’ news channel had crossed all limits in this regard..
Describing the “TRP scam” exposed by Mumbai Police as “first scam of its kind witnessed ever since India attained its independence” and underlined that being I&B Minister, Mr Prakash Jawadekar was directly responsible for it.
He demanded explanation from the I&B Minister as to how his department failed to notice such a huge scam.
Raising question as to ‘whether the Government permitted the TRP scam to take place to facilitate channels taking stand in favour of the ruling party’, Mr Tiwari said, this scam underlines the importance of the ‘Print-Media’.
Notably, Bombay High Court too has questioned the central government as to why no regulatory authority has been founded to monitor functioning of television news channels. In PILs filed accusing television news channels of conducting media trial in actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s death, bench of Chief Justice Dipankar Mishra and Justice Girish Kulkarni, the High Court had underlined need to form a regulatory authority to minitor functioning of television news channels, he added.
