Covid-19 cases in India are set to beat total cases in the U.S. in a matter of weeks as the country continues to add cases at the fastest pace in the world.

India added over 66,000 fresh cases in 24 hours taking the total tally to more than 71 lakh in Asia’s third-largest economy, according to the Health Ministry’s update as of 8 a.m. on Oct. 12. This includes more than 1.09 lakh deaths and nearly 61.4 lakh who have recovered.

U.S. currently has the highest number of Covid-19 cases in the world -- over 78 lakh -- with over 3.4 lakh added in the last week, according to the Center For Disease Control and Prevention. India has added nearly 5 lakh cases in the same time.

Active cases, however, have fallen for the 9th straight day and are below the 8.7 lakh mark after reaching as high as 10.17 lakh in mid September.
