Air customs bust drug smuggling gang, 4 arrested

Chennai, Oct 13 (UNI) Officials of the Customs Air
Intelligence Unit (AIU) on Tuesday busted a drug
smuggling gang with the arrest of four member gang.
Airport Commissioner of Customs Rajan Chaudhary,
in a release, here said based on intelligence, customs
officials intercepted a courier parcel suspected to
contain narcotics substance at Air Courier Terminal
which was destined for Australia.
The parcel was declared to contain spices powder etc.
On examination, branded masala packets of 50 and
100 gms were found inside among other grocery items.
On closer look of some chili powder and sambhar powder
packets were found to be tempered with. On opening, a
plastic pouch containing white crystalline powder was
found concealed inside.
A total of 37 plastic pouches were recovered from inside
the spice packets and the powder tested positive for
Pseudoephedrine.
Total three kgs of pseudoephedrine worth Rs 30 lakh was
recovered and seized under the NDPS Act, 1985.
The parcel was booked in the name of a Theni-based person
and destined to Auburn, New South Wales, Australia.
On searches and investigation it was found that Sathik (37),
a resident of Chennai, who was mastermind in this smuggling
activity, had got the order of three kgs of pseudoephedrine
powder from his buyer in Australia.
He purchased the powder from a Bengaluru-based person
and gave the same to his partner who was based in Thanjavur
with instructions to conceal the same in spice powder packets
to be sent to the Australian address given by him.
His partner in turn took help of one, Khan (30), of Chennai for
concealing the powder in the spice powder packets.
Another person, Antony (41) of Pudukkottai came to Chennai
took delivery of the parcel from Khan and booked the same to
Australia through a Chennai-based courier company in the
name of his friend Selvam, a resident of Theni by misusing
his Aadhar card.
All the four who were involved in smuggling activity have been
arrested under the NDPS Act.
Further investigation is in progress.
