Flood-like situation in northern Karnataka

Kalaburagi, Oct 12 (UNI) Heavy rain continued to pummel in North Karnataka districts for the last 24 hours, flooding crops on thousands of acres in the region and leaving Krishna and Bhima rivers in spate.
Kalaburagi,Bidar,Raichur,Yadgir, Koppal and Vijayapura districts have received heavy rains for the last two days.Incidents of water inundating low-lying areas, entering residential and commercial buildings and causing damage to public and private properties have been reported from the districts.
Many road bridges in the rain-battered Bidar district have gone under the overflowing Manjra river and streams. Bhalki, Aurad and Basavakalyan taluk are the worst hits.
The Raichur district administration has alerted people near Krishna river bank not to venture nearby as 1.16 lakh cusecs of water has been discharged from Basavasagar reservoir at Narayanpur in Hunsagi taluka of Yadgir district following increased outflow from Alamatti.
The Yadgir district received heavy rain between Saturday night and Sunday evening. Rain water mixed with drain entered several houses in Satyampet locality keeping women and elderly persons busy in throwing water out. More than 150 houses were partially damaged and wall collapse incidents also reported in different villages of the districts, sources said.
A 28-year-old man was washed away in a stream near Maski in Raichur district on Sunday. Fire and Emergency Services personnel and the police, however, succeeded in rescuing another man Jaleel (58).
Two days of non-stop rain have created a flood like situation in Vijayapura district as all the rivers and rivulets are in spate causing extensive damage to houses and killing 40 cattle, officials and residents said on Monday. In several parts of the district, fields have become waterlogged, and crops, such as maize, toor, jowar and onion, are in danger.
Koppal district also received heavy rain for the last two days and many tanks and streams overflowing. The local people rescued a person who was stranded in the stream's water near Ghatireddyhal village on Monday morning.
Parts of north-interior and south-interior Karnataka have also been issued orange warnings from the weather office which means very heavy rainfall. These include Bagalkot, Belagavi, Raichur, Yadgir, Kalaburagi, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Kodagu, and Shivamogga, sources added.
