Arunachal, Assam discuss ways to resolve boundary issues

Itanagar, Oct 12 (UNI) The governments of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam on Monday decided to resolve the decades-old boundary issues by maintaining status quo and holding inter-state coordination meetings on regular basis.
The development came when a high-level delegation from Assam led by Chief Secretary Kumar Sanjay Krishna along with Additional Chief Secretary (Home & Political and Border Protection & Development Department) Jishnu Barua and DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta held a meeting with their Arunachal counterparts at Civil Secretariat here on Monday.

Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar who led the state delegation, comprised of Home Commissioner Kaling Tayeng, DGP R P Upadhyaya, IGP (Law & Order) Chukhu Apa, Lower Siang Deputy Commissioner A K Singh, Lower Dibang Valley DC Mitali Namchoom, Papumpare DC Pige Ligu and SP Jimmy Chiram, SP (SB) John Pada, Border Affairs Director Hage Lailang and Joint Director Nighe Bengia.

In the meeting, various important issues pertinent to border disputes were discussed and deliberated by the top officials of both the states.

As a measure to resolve the boundary disputes like encroachments, firewood and sand gravel collection, disputes relating to PMGSY road, drug trafficking/ smuggling, extremist movement etc, a way forward was decided upon in the meeting, a release said.

It was decided that a structured district wise committee should be formed with DCs, SPs, and DFOs of both the bordering districts of the states at district level to address the disputes in their areas. Regular meetings should be held between the counterparts, it was decided. If any dispute arises, it was decided by the top officials that the opposite party should be taken into confidence and resolve the issue in a peaceful manner, it said.

The top officials also agreed to address the issue of cases pending against government officials relating to border disputes at the earliest in the meeting, the release added.

Acknowledging the importance of CBOs in solving some border problems, it was also decided that Community Based Organisations (CBOs) should also consulted and engaged in cases of disputes.

To continue the spirit of brotherhood and bonhomie, both the high level teams decided to conduct games and sports, and cultural exchanges between the people of the two states.

It was also agreed to maintain peace at any cost along the border areas so that the unwanted elements which are taking advantage of the border disputes are checked and controlled.

The top government officials of both sides unanimously agreed to give a humanitarian touch in solving the problems. Both the parties agreed to convene inter-state coordination meetings on regular basis.
