Mumbai power outage: BMC assures city hospitals have backup, non-essential work put on hold

MUMBAI: The BMC Municipal Commissioner said that hospitals in the city will not be affected by the power outage in Mumbai as the city hospitals, including jumbo facilities that take care of Covid patients, have power back up.

"We have permanent 24 by 7 power backup at all hospitals,including jumbos which were activated.Therefore there was no inconvenience to patients anywhere at all", Iqbal Singh, Commissioner BMC told ET in a text message.

A major power grid failure hit the power supply in most parts of Mumbai on Monday morning. Adani electricity said that its teams are working to restore the supply in the affected areas at the earliest.

Mumbai has three electricity distribution companies (discoms)--the state run BEST Undertaking, and the private sector companies Adani Electricity and Tata Power Company. Tata Power is also a power generator supplying a bulk of the electricity that the city consumes.

Raheja Hospital in Mahim, Mumbai said that it has two generators and was keeping one of them as a back up and was shutting down all non essential work areas. "We are keeping the other generator as a backup and we have ensured that our ICU has full supply.", said Hiren Ambegaokar, CEO of Raheja-Fortis Hospital to ET.
