Besides transcripts and entrance examinations college interview is an imperative part of evaluating an applicant wherein a short meeting is organized between a faculty from college and a student applying for admission. These interviews can be held in or outside college premises and can be carried out in person or via video calling platforms. College interviews can be tricky sometimes but that said it is also an opportunity to play your ace. Mentioned below are some tips and tricks to follow before walking into an interview.

Introduction and personality questions

The interviewers ask self-introduction for a start. An introduction shall be short and inclusive of details like name, where you hail from and your academic background. Interviewers may sometime throw follow up questions at you. For instance, “tell me a little about yourself”, “what are your interests” and so on, here the assessor expects a description of your personality traits like interests, hobbies and goals. Interests and goals inclined in the same direction are icing on the cake, thus it is always good to work it out.

Research about the college

It is essential to research about the objectives, goals, courses offered and advantages of studying in the college you are dropping an application in. Thorough research is fruitful when responding to ‘college-fit’ questions. Some of the ‘College-fit’ questions are enlisted below -

“Why do you feel it’s the right college for you?”

“why do you want to attend our college?”

“What can you contribute to our college?”

The responses can be modified based on what the college needs and values. For instance, if a college gives extra-curricular achievements more weightage, make sure it is more marked in the responses. Also, look through the published works of the college and read well on those topics.

In-depth knowledge of subjects

The evaluator can also pose a myriad of questions around the subject you desire to pursue; thus you should be well-versed in the area. Subject-confined knowledge is necessary but not sufficient, it is recommended to well equip oneself with current affairs and general knowledge relating to the field for a nerve-wracking performance.

Expect the unexpected

It is always effectual to enter the interview well-prepared, however, one should also be prepared to deal with unanticipated situations during an interview.

Bear in mind the interview etiquettes

Greet the interviewer and hold up a smile on your face. Interviews go way beyond verbal communication, it encompasses communicating through posture and bearing. Think the right body language through well in advance. Make sure you sit straight and tight in the chair, maintain eye contact, do not fold your hands or cross your legs and make sure your posture signals confidence.

Rehearse

Practice interviews with friends or family member as many time as you can. During the practice sessions make efforts to right the postures and gestures.

Dress appropriately

Dressing neatly in formals not only impresses the decision-maker but also gives the interviewee a sense of confidence and makes oneself ready to step into a formal environment.

Catch a breath and do not stress

At last but not the least, take some time out to relax and calm your mind and nerves. Do deep breathing to freshen up your mind before the interview and keep yourself hydrated because to perform good, one needs to feel good.
