Dalit shepherd forced to fell on feet of upper-caste man in South TN

Thoothukudi, Oct 12 (UNI) In a shocking case of caste oppression, a 60-year-old Dalit shepherd was forced to fell on the feet of a man hailing from the dominant Thevar community and made to apologize after one of his goat ran into the heard of the upper-caste man at Olaikulam village in Kayathar taluk in this Southern district of Tamil Nadu.
Police said a case was registered against seven people on Monday based on a complaint from the victim A.Paulraj under sections 147 (punishment for rioting), 294 (b) (uttering obscenities in public), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 506 (ii) (criminal intimidation) of the IPC, and also under the provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and IT Act.
Superintendent of Police S.Jayakumar told newsmen that six special teams have been formed to nab the accused persons and the Deputy Superintendent of Police of Kovilpatti sub-division has been directed to conduct a probe and submit a report within a week.
He said the upper-caste men also videographed the incident and circulated it on social media.
Though the incident took place on October 8, it came to light today after the victim lodged a complaint with the police about the atrocity committed against him.
Paulraj in his complaint stated that one of his goats ran into the herd of one Sangili Thevar on the day, following which Sangili Thevar spoke ill of his caste. There was an altercation over this after which Sangili Thevar and five of his relatives forced me (Paulraj) to fell on the feet and apologize, otherwise threatened to slit his throat, he said
However, police investigations revealed that Paulraj hit Sangili Thevar’s head with a staff used for grazing during the quarrel resulting in the vengeance.
Meanwhile, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) leader Thol Thirumalavan strongly condemned the incident and urged the State government to take stern action against those involved in the incident. He said it is evident that such uncultured incidents were not confined to North India but happened in Tamil Nadu too and urged the government to put an end to the atrocities committed against the Dalit people.
