DIBRUGARH: Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Sunday said the National Register of Citizens (NRC) is flawed and his government won't accept it in its current form.
Addressing an executive meeting of the BJP Mahila Morcha here in Dibrugarh, Sonowal said the NRC did not do justice to the expectations of the people of Assam, who wanted the exercise to be error-free.
"The NRC was totally flawed and the people of Assam who where expecting a foreigner-free register were disappointed. Had the state government got the responsibility for preparing the NRC, a correct and error-free one would have been presented to the people. We won't accept it in its present form. We have approached the SC for re-verification of the NRC data," Sonowal said, while addressing the gathering on the second and final day of the state executive meeting of the BJP Mahila Morcha Assam Pradesh at the Chowkidinghee playground.
"The Centre and state have been working for the cause of women empowerment," he said.
