Rafael Nadal's 1st serve percentage fell down in the third set but he kept up his win percentage on the first serve and the second serve. Djokovic had seven more winners than Nadal but his 52 unforced errors to just 14 from Nadal eventually cost the Serb.

"I said before but all of Novak's team and family, great weeks, winning in Australia, in Cincinnati, and more. What you are doing in tennis is special. It is my pleasure to share this with you, we have had tough battle, hope to share this with you for the next couple of more years. All the best.

"Huge congratulation to Rafa, your team, your family. What you are doing on this court is incredible, also everything you have done in your career. You showed today why you are the King of Clay, I experienced in my own skin.

"I am not happy with my performance today, I was clearly outplayed by a better player. These are tough times and we are lucky to be able to play the sport that we love. Thank you to everyone for making this tournament possible."

"First of all of course, congrats to Novak for another great tournament. Sorry for today. Today was for me and that's part of the game. We have played each other for long and one days one wins and another on another day. All the best for the future.

"After all the things I have gone through in my career in terms of injuries, without a great team and family, it would be impossible. I can only thank them. All the family came here in these tough times. I want to say to everyone around the world, we are facing a tough situation, fighting the virus, keeping going, stay positive, we will win this battle soon.

And it's a 20th Grand Slam for Rafael Nadal, he equals the record of his great rival and close friend Roger Federer. Novak Djokovic falls short of closing in the gap in the Grand Slam race.
