Prices of many of the vegetables have fallen by around 10 per cent at Koyambedu wholesale market complex this week, which, however, may not last for long. Vendors at the market said it was expected to rise by the end of the week due to supply constraints.
Chennai:
“The prices have fallen because we received more supply after shifting back to Koyambedu, and because more vendors are able to put up their stalls here. Prices have fallen by about 10 per cent, but they might increase again due to supply constrains due to rains in Andhra Pradesh and other states,” said P Sukumaran, treasurer, Koyambedu Vegetable Merchant’s Association.
The price of beans is expected to be Rs 45 per kg this week, while the price of broad beans has fallen to Rs 30-35 per kg from Rs 40 per kg. Brinjal prices this week is Rs 40 per kg, down from the earlier Rs 50/kg last week. The price of potatoes will remain at Rs 30 per kg, and tomatoes are sold for Rs 30-35 per kg this week.
However, vendors are unhappy with some of the logistical decisions taken at Koyambedu, including the trickle system of vehicles into and out of the market. “The traffic issues within the market are hindering business. If this is done away with, vendors would be able to receive more stock. The restrictions on timing also need to be lifted so that the market functions smoother and easier,” said a vendor.
