Compensation to farmers for acquiring land for expressway as per UPA policy: Cheema

Sultanpur Lodhi, Oct 11 (UNI) Navtej Singh Cheema MLA from Sultanpur Lodhi demanded that for acquiring land of farmers for Delhi-Katra Expressway passing through the villages of Sultanpur Lodhi constituency they should be compensated more than the market price and adequate compensation.
He said the process of land acquisition was underway in the villages of Sultanpur Lodhi constituency and the farmers of the constituency had expressed concern over the low price of land due to unclear compensation policy.
He said this expressway costing Rs. 35000 crore was much needed for the development of the state but the farmers should get maximum compensation for acquiring land for this work.
He said the previous UPA government under the leadership of Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh had formulated a special policy for land acquisition under which the farmers would get many times more than the market price under the Displacement Allowance and Rehabilitation Policy , which did not pose any problem in acquiring land for any project in the state.
He said the SAD-BJP alliance government had introduced a new policy of land acquisition in 2017 by changing the law of UPA government which was causing a lot of protest among the farmers due to lack of clear compensation policy.
He said he demanded from the Union Government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi that the farmers should be given proper compensation for the land as the only source of livelihood for the farmers was land.
He said he was committed to provide adequate compensation to the farmers of the area and this issue would be taken up in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha if required.
He said he would write a letter to Punjab Chief Minister Capt. Amarinder Singh and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to convey the grievances of the farmers.
He assured the farmers of the area that he and the Congress party would stand shoulder to shoulder in the fight for their rights and they would fight for any legal or administrative action.
