LNP offers car owners a $300 Christmas gift

Queensland car owners will be given a $300 rebate by the end of the year if the LNP wins government on October 31.

LNP leader Deb Frecklington was expected to make the announcement from the marginal electorate of Mansfield on Brisbane’s southside on Sunday morning.

Under the proposal, every registered car across the state would be eligible for cash under the $1.15 billion plan.

"The LNP's $300 rego rebate will give Queenslanders more cash to spend this Christmas," Ms Frecklington said.

"I am asking Queenslanders to go out and spend their $300. Please spend it on your family, spend it with local businesses, spend it to make your Christmas better."

The promise follows Labor's 1.8 per cent increase in registration fees in July, which took the annual payment for a four-cylinder vehicle to $392.85.

This was an increase of $6.95 on the previous year, or about 14 cents a week. The total cost to register a four-cylinder vehicle for private use is now $744.45 with compulsory third-party insurance.

Ms Frecklington said about 3.8 million cars would be covered by the LNP's rebate, which would be payable on every registered car, meaning a two-car household would be eligible for $600.

Mansfield is one of the nine seats the party needs to snatch off Labor if it has any hope of forming a majority government.

The electorate, which stretches from Rochedale to Mount Gravatt East, is held by former school principal Corrine McMillan by a 1.6 per cent margin.
