MADURAI: The Bodinayakkanur Town police have arrested two lawyers for having forging documents and using them to get bail for their clients.
Inquiries revealed that the accused, S Kani, 32, from Kuppinayakkanpatti village and his junior K Ramadevi, 23, from Bodi, have got bails by such fraudulent means for over 35 persons in the past two years.
A police officer said the court requires cash or property as a bond to release a person on bail. If a person does not appear when the court summons, then the court can forfeit the said property.
The lawyers, who have an office at Thevaram Main Road and are practicing at the Bodiyanakkanur judicial magistrate court, used the forged documents to show their applicant have required property to apply for bail.
The incident came to light when fellow lawyers suspected foul play as they received bail instantly. A few months ago, Chandrasekar, a practicing advocate, submitted a petition to the Theni Chief Judicial Magistrate court to conduct an inquiry into the documents produced by the accused.
An inquiry with the revenue officials revealed that the documents bearing the seals and signatures of village administrative officials were fake. After obtaining a report from the revenue department, Bodinayakkanur judicial magistrate court conducted an inquiry.
Following this, a case was then registered with the Bodinayakkanur Town police station.
They were booked under five sections of IPC including 471 (using forged documents as genuine ones), 468 (forgery for the purpose of cheating), 464 (making a false document)
The accused were arrested on Friday after police inspector B Shajakhan conducted an inquiry and a search in the law office. No incriminating documents were seized from the search.
