Soon you can get international driving permits renewed when abroad

NEW DELHI: Soon people traveling abroad can apply for renewal of the International Driving Permit (IDP), if their permits get expired while they are still overseas. They will be allowed to apply through the portals of Indian embassies or missions abroad and the applications would then move to the Parivahan portal for the respective RTOs to process them.
Parivahan portal is the national register of all DLs and RCs..
The proposal also includes the removal of the conditions of a medical certificate and a valid visa at the time of making the request for the IDP in the country since the citizen who has a valid driving licence won't need another medical certificate.
This Visa condition is being done away with as several countries offer Visa on arrival and in such cases the visa was not available when applying for the IDP in India before travel.
However, those applying for renewal of the IDP would need to pay a fee of Rs 2,000, proof of valid driving licence, three copies of passport photographs, valid proof of nationality and proof of valid passport.
They will also need to give the address at which the renewed IDP can be delivered where the person is staying.
“It has come to notice that in certain cases for the Citizens who are travelling abroad and in a foreign country, the International Driving Permit gets expired and there is no mechanism for its renewal while abroad. We have issued draft notification to make changes in the Central Motor Vehicle Rules. This is yet another move to improve ease of living. After receiving suggestions and objections we will issue the final notification. This will help Indians travelling abroad,” said a road transport ministry official.
