AMBALA: Due to prompt attention of railway police force (RPF) officials, a woman traveling from Ludhiana to Delhi in a train gave birth to a healthy baby at a platform of railway station, Ambala Cantonment on Saturday evening.
The railway officials received the information at about 4.30pm, that a pregnant woman present in front of the parcel office on platform number 2/4 of the railway station, Ambala Cantt, is about to deliver immediately.
ASI Santosh Sharma, accompanied by women constable Shalu Pundir, immediately reached the spot and the. passengers were covered by ASI Satveer Kumar and platform duty staff constable-Rajneesh Kumar, constable Feroz Khan and constable Manmeet Singh and by the said female staff.
The pregnant woman identified as Maryam Khatoon of Main Road Madrasa Dariyapur, Sangrampur in Purvi Champaran district of Bihar, was traveling along with her husband Sahib Hussain and two women on train number 04650, Saryu Yamuna Special Express, on a ticket from Ludhina to Delhi, said the railway officials.
Ambala senior divisional commercial manager (SrDCM) Hari Mohan told, "The woman gave birth to a girl at 4.40pm and she was covered with curtains by the officials during her delivery. Both mother and child are healthy."
Parcel supervisor Sarika and chief parcel supervisor Pushpa Yadav from the Commerce Department Parcel Office was present in the proceedings to assist the staff, said Hari Mohan.
He said the ambulance was called by the station superintendent at 4.50pm and concerned medical officer Dr Gurmeet Singh reached the station at 5pm.
He added that the woman and her newborn girl left in an ambulance from Ambala station at 5.15 pm to the civil hospital Ambala Cantt.
Commerce department and RPF staff were appreciated by the women travelers.
