Nine arrested for assisting offenders in fleeing Hong Kong

Hong Kong, Oct 10 (Xinhua) Nine people were arrested Saturday on suspicion of assisting 12 Hong Kong residents to flee the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region by illegal means, the Hong Kong police said.
The 12 people boarded a speedboat arranged by a smuggling syndicate in the Po Toi O pier in Sai Kung, New Territories, in late August. They planned to flee to Taiwan via mainland marine waters in order to evade criminal responsibility in Hong Kong, and were later arrested in mainland waters.
The nine people arrested included four men and five women aged between 27 and 72, Senior Superintendent Ho Chun-tung from the police force's Organized Crime and Triad Bureau said.
Most of them are friends with the 12 Hong Kong residents and played different roles in the case, including speedboat owners, providing funds, and arranging transportation and accommodation, Ho said.
The police also seized over 500,000 Hong Kong dollars in cash, computers and mobile phones as well as receipts during the operation.
The police have also been looking into whether the nine suspects had assisted others to flee Hong Kong, and did not rule out the possibility of more arrests.
Under Hong Kong's Criminal Procedure Ordinance, anyone attempting to impede the arrest of a suspect without lawful grounds is guilty and liable to a maximum of 10-year imprisonment.
