Jaipur, Oct 10 (UNI) The kin of priest Babu Lal Vaishnav, who was allegedly attacked by land encroachers in a village of Rajasthan and eventually succumbed to his injuries on October 8, ended their protests and agreed to cremate his body, BJP MP Kirodi Lal Meena said on Saturday.
Taking to micro-blogging site Twitter, Mr Meena said decision was taken after an 11-member delegation from the state government held talks with the family members, who had earlier refused to perform the priest's last rites, demanding arrest of the guilty and compensation from the government.
The delegation informed them that Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh, job for one family member and a house under the PM Awas Yojna. Also, the local police station in-charge was transferred from the area, he added.
Stressing that there cannot be any tolerance for violence, the Chief Minister also promised that the guilty would not be spared.
The kin said that they were satisfied with the compensation announced.
The incident happened on Wednesday at Bukna village in Sapotra of Karauli district, when five people poured petrol on temple priest Babulal Vaishnav and set him ablaze, after he reportedly resisted their attempt to encroach upon and build a plot on the temple land.
The 50-year-old succumbed to the burn injuries at SMS Hospital in Jaipur on Thursday evening. The body was handed over to the family members on Friday.
According to police, they have recorded the statement of the priest before his death and registered a case under relevant Sections of IPC.
Main accused, identified as Kailash Meena, was arrested, while others were still at large.
The incident took a political turn, after former Rajasthan chief minister and National Vice President of BJP Vasundhara Raje hit out at the Congress government, alleging that the crime rate in the desert state had risen in the past two years. Children, women, traders, Dalits and elderly were not safe in the state, under the present circumstances, said Ms Raje.
Union Minister Prakash Javadekar also asked Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to help solve the rising crime rates in Rajasthan, instead of going to different places on 'political tourism.'
Meanwhile, Rajasthan BJP president Satish Poonia announced the formation of a three-member fact-finding committee.
Slamming the Rajasthan government over the brutal killing, Mr Poonia said a party delegation, headed by Karauli-Dholpur MP Manoj Rajoria, and comprising three BJP MPs, would meet the family of the priest.
