COVID-19 : Cop inquires about caste for mask violation, shifted to AR

Chennai, Oct 9 (UNI) The police department was caught
in an embarrassing position after a constable inquired
about the caste details of a VCK functionary who was
found riding his two-wheeler without wearing the mandatory
face mask in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The incident, which took place in Tiruppur district of Tamil
Nadu yesterday afternoon, went viral on the social media
after which the cop, attached to the Perumanallur police
station, was shifted to the Armed Reserve (AR), along with
another constable who was also present at the spot.
Police said P Sivakumar, Avinashi VCK functionary had just
finished his lunch and was riding in his two-wheeler with his
wife, when he was stopped by the cop Kasiraja for not
wearing the mask.
As he was not wearing the mask (but his wife was wearing it)
the cop asked for his particulars like name and address and
later started asking about his caste.
However, Sivakumar refused to divulge it and said he was
prepared to pay the fine amount for mask violation.
He also said it was not the duty of the police to ask about the
caste details and that only fine should be levied for mask
violation and that he was prepared to pay it.
Sivakumar video recorded the arguments with the cop in his
android phone and circulated it in the social media last evening
and it went viral.
It was also repeatedly telecast in various TV news channels,
since this morning causing embarrassing moments for the
police.
Police said on seeing the video, Kasiraja and the other cop
Nataraj, who was at the spot, were called for a preliminary
inquiry after which they were shifted to the AR today.
District police sources said further disciplinary action would
be initiated against them after the completion of the inquiry.
