A Bhubaneswar court through a hearing held late on Thursday sent a Major accused of dowry harassment to Army custody.
The sub-divisional court held a physical hearing in the case after attempts at video conferencing failed, with the hearing continuing past 1.30 am Friday. After the hearing, the judge ordered that the Major be sent to Army custody instead of jail.
On Wednesday, the Major’s wife filed a complaint at a Mahila police station, accusing him of dowry harassment and attempt to murder. The woman has stated in her complaint that the accused threatened to shoot her if she failed to get money from her parents. In her complaint, she has also alleged mental and physical torture,” a police official, adding that the two had earlier tried to resolve the matter mutually, but the Major continued to threaten and torture her.
Based on the woman’s complaint, police registered an FIR under IPC Sections 307 (attempt to murder), 498A (Husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) and 326 (Voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means) and under sections of the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961.
The police first sent the Major a notice, but after he failed to respond to it, they arrested him on Thursday.
