Thane set to become fifth district in country to cross 2 lakh Covid cases

MUMBAI: Thane is set to become the fifth district in India -and third in Maharashtra after Pune and Mumbai-to cross the two-lakh tally of Covid-19 cases.

As per the state's update on Thursday evening, Thane district has 1,99,925 positive cases. Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation remains the Covid hotspot in the district, touching 45,175 cases, followed by Thane city (39,694). Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has 39,421 cases.
Health officials said increased testing after the Ganesh Chaturthi in August-September saw a rise in positive cases in Thane district. Though restrictions will be imposed during the Navratri, officials fear a further rise in cases. Curbing the spread poses a bigger challenge in Thane as it lacks a robust health infrastructure.
Thane district has more active cases than Mumbai
While two districts in the state – Pune and Mumbai – have already crossed the two-lakh mark, Delhi and Bengaluru are the other districts in India to have breached the grim milestone, and Chennai with 1.78 lakh cases is the sixth district in the country with maximum cases. Pune was the first district in the country to reach two lakh cases on September 7. Mumbai crossed the tally on September 28.
Unlocking has also triggered risks of a case spike in Thane district. What is worrisome is the higher number of active cases in Thane (32,161) compared to Mumbai (26,383).
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) comprising Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Palghar and Raigad crossed two lakh cases on July 20. It added another one lakh plus cases by August 21.
The Panvel City Municipal Corporation that falls in Thane district has 20,951 cases, while the total cases in Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation, also in the district, stood at 19,942 on Thursday.
