CHENNAI: More than 10,000 people have died of Covid-19 in Tamil Nadu so far. Thursday’s 68 deaths took the toll to 10,052. The state also reported 5,088 fresh cases, though the number of active cases fell below 45,000 for the first time in months to 44,437.
Tamil Nadu is the second state to cross 10,000 deaths after Maharashtra, which has recorded more than 39,000 deaths. The case fatality rate in Tamil Nadu (1.6%) is lower than in Maharashtra (2.7%) and almost on a par with the average fatality rate in the country (1.5%).
Analysis by officials showed that the case fatality rate was close to 16% among nonagenarians and 14% among people in the 80-90 age groups. Fatality rate is below 1% in people below 50 years. The number of deaths, however, was the highest in the 61-70, 51-60 and 71-80 years age groups because of the number of people infected. Out of every 100 deaths, 31 were people in the 61-70 age group, 24 were in the 51-60 group and 21 were in the 71-80 group. At least 33% of people who died had a combination of diabetes and hypertension, 25% had diabetes and 13% had hypertension.
While age is a risk factor, more than 5,428 people above 80 years, including 430 people above 90, have recovered from the viral infection, according to data provided by the state health department. In the city, 32 of the 40 patients above 90 admitted to Omandurar Medical College Hospital, 21 of 29 patients in Stanley Medical College Hospital and 14 of the 16 patients in Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital have recovered. “The key to success is early admission,” said Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital dean Dr Therani Rajan.
On Thursday, Chennai recorded 1,295 cases and 16 deaths. The 11 northern districts, including Chennai, together recorded 2,553 cases and 37 deaths while the eight western districts had 1,498 new cases and 15 deaths. Coimbatore topped the table among western districts with 448 cases followed by Salem (362).
While there were 12,622 active cases in the west, there were 4,487 in the south and 4,428 in the central zone. The central districts reported 559 cases and nine deaths compared to 474 cases and seven deaths in the south.
