Man charged after punch leaves shopping centre guard in a critical condition

A 30-year-old man has been charged after a security guard was attacked at a shopping centre in the Moreton Bay region, north of Brisbane, and rushed to hospital in a critical condition.

Emergency services were called to the Caboolture Square shopping centre in King Street about 1.40pm on Friday after the 38-year-old man was allegedly assaulted.

Police allege a male attacker threw a chair at a shop inside the centre near the Gloria Jean's cafe, breaking the chair and attracting the security guard's attention.

When the guard confronted the man, he was allegedly punched in the face, causing him to fall backwards and hit his head on the ground, according to police.

The Queensland Ambulance Service confirmed the guard suffered severe head injuries and was rushed to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital in a critical condition.

A police spokesman said the attacker fled the scene but officers knew his identity.

Later on Friday afternoon, a man was taken into custody in Caboolture and later charged with grievous bodily harm, wilful damage and contravening a domestic violence order.

He will appear at Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Saturday.
