VILLUPURAM: Police on Thursday arrested a 29-year-old woman for poisoning her daughter, allegedly over poverty, at their house at Pappankulam in the town. A court later sent Yasmin to jail.
A police officer said Yasmin and her husband Sadhik Basha, 35, had a daughter and son before she gave birth to their third child, a girl, in May. Basha, a private bus conductor, had been laid off since March due to Covid-19 Trapped in poverty and debt, Yasmin, according to her confession, on August 27 murdered the newborn by feeding her milk laced with poison.
Government Villupuram Medical College and Hospital who declared the infant dead removed vital organs for an autopsy and handed over the body to the family. On Thursday, the postmortem report confirmed poisoning.
