MADURAI: A city-based jeweller on Thursday night committed suicide following a loss in his business due to a theft at his outlet and the pandemic.
The man has been identified as Renganathan, aged 62.
Renganathan's family members found him hanging at his house near Thilagar Thidal on Friday morning.
Police retrieved the body and sent it to a government hospital for an autopsy.
After conducting inquiries with the kin, inspector G Kavitha said, "There was a theft at his shop a few days ago. A probe regarding the same is under way by South gate police. This affected his business. Renganathan also borrowed money from a few persons, who asked him to return the money."
The inspector added that Renganathan's business was already at loss due to the pandemic.
On Thursday night, Renganathan was at his house with his wife, daughter, daughter-in-law, a relative and grandchild.
After everyone fell asleep, he hanged himself with a rope in the living room.
