Panaji : The Bharatiya Bhasha Suraksha Manch on Thursday welcomed the observation of the Supreme Court made during the October 6 hearing of a case related to mother tongue in the primary education.

“A child has to learn his mother tongue to gain a foundation,” the Supreme Court Chief Justice Sharad Bobde had observed during the hearing.

State BBSM co-ordinator Subhash Velingkar said the BBSM is demanding in line with the observation that steps be taken by the state government to make the medium of primary education only Konkani or Marathi as per the national education policy.

“The Goa government will have to rescind its two-pronged, political decision dating back to 2012, that provided government grants to English primary schools, which is a blow to the concept of primary education in mother tongue,” he reckoned.

“The government will have to stop its anti-mother tongue policy of providing subsidy to a foreign language by misleading the people,” Velingkar said.

He also stated that at the same time, the BBSM will have to take to the streets once again, given the experience of past betrayals, in order to strengthen the foundation of a child’s education, at least at the elementary level.
