Police showed restraint during Thursday's Nabanna march: West Bengal chief secretary

KOLKATA: Chief secretary Alapan Bandyopadhyay praised the role of police for showing restraint during the agitation on Thursday.
He said that there were some provocations. “Police were attacked and some policemen were injured. There was a recovery of arms.” He said that in Kolkata Police detained 89 detained persons while in Howrah 24 people were detained. He said that the briefing was done hurriedly, so figures were yet to be properly compiled.
He said that a colour normally used in Holi was used in the water canons to identify the protestors later if needed.
“Yesterday a political organization wrote to the state home department and the police a letter seeking permission for the Nabanna rally. We replied r within two hours according to the Supreme Court verdict and the NDM Act that this rally is not permissible.”
“We replied through a letter that requesting them mentioning about the NDMA to help us as there is also Sec 144 CrPC around Nabanna. “
Bandyopadhyay said that the state government had mentioned in their letter about holding peaceful and democratic rallies within the allowable parameters. “We welcome all peaceful and democratic rallies having specific destinations and that is not against the rule of law,” he said.
“We didn’t get the answer to our letter,” Badyopadhyay said, while referring to the letter sent by a special secretary of the home department to the BJP youth wing.
He said that the organisers had mentioned about brining in 25000 youths at different points But this is not a permissible figure during the Covid19 situation. “Any number below that and within the permissible limit could have been navigable but this letter distinctly mentioned a number which we considered was huge.”
