Tamil Nadu’s Covid-19 death toll crosses a grim milestone

CHENNAI: The Covid-19 death toll in Tamil Nadu breached the 10,000-mark on Thursday. As many as 10,052 people have succumbed to the infection since March. On Thursday, the state reported 68 deaths and 5,088 fresh Covid-19 cases.
The case tally touched 6,40,943, while there were 44,437 people still under treatment.
“From about 100-120 deaths, we are now reporting 60-70 deaths a day. This is because of aggressive testing, isolation and treatment,” said health secretary J Radhakrishnan. The state had tested more than 78 lakh people thus far, he said.
On Thursday, Chennai recorded 1,295 cases and 16 deaths. Chennai region recorded 1,989 cases and 24 deaths.
Coimbatore topped the table among western districts with 448 cases followed by Salem (362).
The central districts reported 559 cases and nine deaths compared to 474 cases and seven deaths in the south.
