Margao: The chief officer of Margao Municipal Council (MMC) Agnelo Fernandes and his teams will begin cracking down on the fish vendors selling fish illegally along the roadside, within the MMC areas, from Monday.

The chief officer is compelled to act following the complaints from the retail fish vendors and the residents.

Fish is being sold along the roadsides at Ring Road, Khareband, on the western bypass road at Seraulim, near wholesale fish market, besides the market areas.

Many have also started selling fish at the MMC border areas since the beginning of COVID pandemic.

“We have formed teams. The drive will start from Monday. We cannot encourage illegalities. All the confiscated fish will be given to the old age homes and shelter homes. I have sought a report from the market inspectors to know the factual position, before we begin the drive,” the chief officer said.

The chief officer further said that procedures will be simplified for issuing the birth certificates and correction of the birth certificates.

He also informed that three places have been identified – one near Aquem Power House and two near the KRC station for creating the street vending zones for the benefit of the vendors.

“We are collecting the data of the street vendors, who suffered during the COVID pandemic. A loan of Rs 10,000 would be provided to each of these vendors.  The MMC has issued 323 identity cards to the street vendors in Margao so far. The municipalities in Goa were asked to carry out a survey of the street vendors in their respective jurisdictions, and based on the data prepare a plan to create street vending zones,” he said.
