MUMBAI: Even as Maharashtra continued to report under 15,000 cases for the fifth day in a row, Mumbai on Wednesday reported its highest single-day addition so far. On the 213th day of the Covid-19 pandemic in Mumbai, the largest number of patients – 2,848 – were added to the city’s tally. The previous highest single-day addition was on September 30, when 2,654 cases were added.
The Mumbai caseload stands at 2.19 lakh. The state added 14,578 cases and 355 deaths, taking its total cases to 14,80,489 and total fatalities to 39,074. Maharashtra has been adding over 350 fatalities for the last two days.

As per the BMC update, the city witnessed a record number of tests – 15,683 – as against 11,287 the previous day. “The city average is around 12,000 tests a day,” said a civic official. The surge could also be the result of increased testing, officials said.
The Covid deaths in Mumbai remained constant as 46. Thirty-nine of the victims had comorbidities and 29 were above 60 years of age. Incidentally, Mumbai’s highest-ever single-day tally came a day after Covid-19 cases were the lowest in 21 days (1,625). The toll in Mumbai is 9,248 so far.
A BMC public health department official said Wednesday’s tally could be due to cases coming in from the rest of the Mumbai region. The official said over 2,000 cases were deleted from the overall tally last week after a ward-wise reconciliation exercise showed duplication of cases and addition of people living outside city limits. “We seem to be adding a couple of hundred cases extra every day as many out-of-towners seek treatment in Mumbai and give wrong addresses,” the official added. BMC has now started a weekly reconciliation exercise to correct this.
In a positive trend for the last three days, recoveries are higher than daily additions in the state. This has also led to a drop in active cases in the state as well as in the city. There are 2.4 lakh active cases in the state, of which 26,544 people are in Mumbai. MMR continues to drive the Covid graph, with 5,401 cases and 95 deaths added on Wednesday. Thane district has a total of 1.9 lakh cases. Kalyan-Dombivli reported 389 fresh cases and seven deaths. In Thane, 414 cases and seven deaths were reported.
