As China continues its salami slicing strategy, PM and Xi Jinping to come face-to-face at BRICS

New Delhi, Oct 8 (UNI) Even as China continues with its salami slicing strategy against India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping will come face-to-face at the 12th BRICS Summit to be held on November 17.

The Summit of the top leaders of BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) countries to be held virtually for the first time, will deliberate on the theme “BRICS Partnership for Global Stability, Shared Security and Innovative Growth”

As the two leaders prepare to come face-to-face, Beijing has persisted with its border belligerence in Ladakh resulting in India upping its defences along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). The situation remains tense despite Defence and Foreign Ministry officials of both countries having held a series of meetings.

The two laders last shared a platfom on March 26 at the G-20 meet held by Saudi Arabia.

The main purpose of Russia’s BRICS Chairmanship is to promote ‘’multifaceted cooperation among BRICS countries and contribute to raising the living standards and quality of life of the people of the member nations.

This year the five member countries have continued close strategic partnership on all the three major pillars--peace and security, economy and finance, cultural and people-to-people exchanges.

“Despite the current global situation due to the spread of the coronavirus infection, the activities under the Russian BRICS Chairmanship are carried out in a consistent manner. Since January more than 60 events have been organized, including via video conference,’’ Anton Kobyakov, Adviser to Russian President Vladimir Putin, said.

He said the BRICS Summit would be the ‘’jewel-in-the-crown’’ event of the Russian BRICS Chairmanship which will provide impetus for further strengthening cooperation among the member States to ensure well-being of BRICS countries.
