Nurses in Coimbatore’s main Covid-19 hospital lauded for helping woman give birth

COIMBATORE: Nurses in ESI Medical College and Hospital on Thursday attended to a pregnant woman and helped her give birth to a baby boy. ESI Hospital is thhe main Covid -19 treatment centre in Coimbatore.
The patient, who was a 27-year-old MA graduate from Neelikonampalayam, was due for labour with her second child.
At 9.30am on Thursday, she approached ESI Hospital with labour pain. She was not tested for Covid-19 infection.
“When the nurses in emergency ward examined her, they realised that she was fully dilated,” said hospital dean Dr Nirmala. The nurses decided to handle the case even before knowing if the mother was Covid-19 positive or negative.
The baby boy weighed 2.85 kg was born at 9.38am, exactly eight minutes after admission.
“Both the baby, who was given to doctors in the pediatric ward for check-up, and the mother were healthy. They were kept in an isolation ward,” the dean said.
"After a few hours, following a request from the patient and her family, the mother and baby were shifted to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital,” she said.
The dean later praised the nurses for timely intervention and confidently conducting the delivery.
