MADURAI: A man, who jumped aside to avoid a big concrete slab that fell from the fourth floor of a building being demolished in Nagercoil town, hung precariously in the air from its second storey after his right hand got stuck below the slab. Fire service personnel however rescued the 21-year-old worker, who suffered multiple fractures on his right hand, in half-an-hour and got him hospitalised.
The private complex on the Kottar - Chettikulam Road was among those demolished for road widening. Around 15 people were at work on Wednesday evening when the big concrete slab fell from the fourth floor and landed on the second where Manikandan was standing. Though he jumped aside, his right hand was stuck below the slab. With no support for his legs he was dangling in the air. “We gave him a support for his legs so that he could rest,” district fire officer B Saravanababu said. The rescue team cut the iron rods from the slab that were piercing his hand and then lifted the slab with ropes. Rushed to the Kanyakumari government medical college and hospital, his condition is said to be stable.
