VARANASI: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) Varanasi unit seized three kg of gold worth Rs 1.51 crore by arresting two persons from Howrah-Delhi special train at Deen Dayal Upadhyaya railway station in Chandauli district. It was followed by arrest of mastermind of this smuggling gang from Lucknow with cash Rs 1.10 crore and foreign currency of over Rs 5 lakh value.
DRI officials on Wednesday said that acting on a tip-off their sleuth raided DDU railway station on intervening night of October 4 and 5. When Howrah-New Delhi special train reached there they caught two persons of Sultanpur district from B2 coach after three pieces of gold of one kg each were recovered from their bags, which valued Rs 1.51 crores, they added.
During initial investigation of DRI officials it came to light that the gold bars were smuggled through Myanmar to Kolkata from where it was being sent, they said adding on the basis of input given by arrested persons, simultaneous search and raid operations were conducted in Lucknow and Patna which led the recovery of cash Rs 1.10 crore in cash and assorted foreign currency of Rs 5.45 lakh value. The DRI also arrested the mastermind of this gang, who had to receive the three kg foreign origin gold.
Further investigation at different places including Kolkata, Sultanpur and Lucknow is in progress to nab their other accomplices, added DRI.
