Three militants were killed in an overnight gunfight in south Kashmir’s Shopian and their identities are being ascertained, police said.

Meanwhile, police have identified the militant killed in Ganderbal on Tuesday night as Shabir Ahmad Shah, a close aide of slain Hizbul Mujahideen commander Riyaz Naikoo.

The Shopian skirmish broke out on Tuesday afternoon after the J&K Police, Army and CRPF cordoned-off Sugan village. Two militants were said to be killed on Tuesday evening but the operation was halted because of darkness. On Wednesday morning, the joint team resumed the operation after which the third militant was killed.

A police officer said. “We are ascertaining their identity. They seem to be local boys.”
