Born in San Juan, Alessandra was educated in the U.S. and holds a master's degree in marriage and family therapy.
She is now a clinical sexologist with more than 20 years of experience and has published a number of books.
Alessandra will be replacing departing MAFS expert Dr Trisha Stratford, who confirmed last month that she was leaving the show after seven seasons.
