Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the UK Government has acted with speed for safeguarding the Northern Ireland jobs. This support included a cut in VAT to five per cent for not only protecting the hospitality industry but also making sure that it thrives. Here’s how it helps employers, employees and the community.
It creates new opportu¬nities in important tourism and hospitality industries for preserving the coun¬try’s economic future.
The package of measures gives businesses like hotels, restau¬rants, pubs and guest houses the confidence to retain existing staff, recruit more employees and pro¬vide them with training. In Northern Ireland, no less than 150,000 people are employed in this sector. The UK Government has acted to protect the future of the industry and those working in it.
The temporary VAT reduction from 20 per cent to five per cent for tourism and hospitality encourages con¬sumers to benefit from eating out, days out and to make the most of domestic travel in a safe way, where there are relaxations of lockdown rules.
The scheme would save households an average £160 per year, and support more than 2.4 million staff at more than 150,000 businesses. It would assist them in recovering and reopening after COVID-19 lockdowns. The initiative would also provide businesses with the con-fidence to retain their staff and continue with their business activity.
