One record simply wasn’t enough for Fort Myers senior Paris Thompson.

The star outside hitter and Notre Dame volleyball commit needed just six kills to become the all-time Green Wave leader in that category. She broke the mark of 1,159 established by Brittany Potanovic in 2007 – getting the record-breaker late in Game 1 of the Green Wave’s 3-1 victory over rival Riverdale on Tuesday night at Suncoast Credit Union Arena.

She was on the attack all night and when the match was finished, she had 35 kills – breaking her own single-game mark of 31 set in last year’s win over Riverdale.

“I’m super excited because I know it hadn’t been broken in a long time and I know the players who have broken it in the past were really good players and went on the college,” Thompson said. “To be able to break a record like that is really awesome.”

Fort Myers coach Stephanie Martin said she still had goosebumps after watching Thompson’s performance, acknowledging the tremendous impact she’s had on her program over the last four years.

“She’s just a great person,” Martin said. “She’s got a bubbly personality and she always puts her teammates first. And she works really hard, all-year round. She’s constantly working on her game and improving. But the best thing I can say about her is just her heart and how well she treats people. That goes a long way.”

Fort Myers started off in fine fashion, winning the first game 25-14. But the Raiders gave them all they could handle in the next two. The Green Wave needed a late rally to win the second game, scoring the last seven points to secure a 25-23 win. Riverdale stayed in the match with a 25-22 win in the third, before the Green Wave were able to close them out 25-19 in the fourth game.

“We play with a lot of the girls (on Riverdale) in club volleyball so it’s a good rivalry match,” she said. “We got to play with all our friends, pretty much, and there was a lot of talking at the net and laughing but we’re glad we got it done and got it done pretty fast.”

Sophia Leon-Tabor posted a match-high 46 assists along with 12 digs for the Green Wave. Reagan Rebeor paced the Green Wave with 26 digs.

Logyn Geryn led Riverdale with 11 kills and 13 digs. Brayden Hipp added 12 digs and 27 assists.

Fort Myers (12-2) has one more regular-season match, traveling to Port Charlotte Wednesday. The Green Wave open postseason play against South Fort Myers on Monday. Riverdale (11-4) hosts Lehigh on Thursday before starting district play against North Fort Myers on Monday.

“I think ball control went out the window a little bit late in this match,” Martin said. “So we learned a lot and know there are things we need to work on to get ready (for postseason play).”
