Members of a Hindu outfit jointly with Tirupur police rescued two truckloads of cattle taken under inhumane conditions to Kerala for slaughtering on Tuesday.
Coimbatore:
Acting on a tip-off, the members of Shiv Sena blocked two lorries laden with cattle on the national highway near Chengapally. “There were around 29 buffaloes in one lorry coming from Andhra Pradesh and 38 in another from Haryana. They were being smuggled to Kerala for slaughter,” police said. On receiving information, the Perumanallur police rushed to the spot and confiscated both the lorries. “The animals were found tied neck to neck without any air space in a cruel manner. Also, as the buffaloes were not kept in the partition with enough gap, they have suffered severe bruises and were found exhausted. The animals were also not given proper fodder or water during travel, said a cop. The Perumanallur police booked the two lorry drivers under Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act for illegally transporting the cattle under torturous conditions. The animals were likely to be sheltered at a rescue centre for animals in the district. Further inquiries are on.
