Three of family washed away in PAP canal near Tirupur

COIMBATORE: Three members of a family, including a 12-year-old girl, were washed away in the Parambikulam – Aliyar Project (PAP) canal near Palladam in Tirupur district of Tamil Nadu on Tuesday.
While the body of one of them was recovered from the canal on Wednesday morning, police and fire and rescue service personnel were searching for the other two.
They recovered the body of Devi, 18. Search was continuing for her husband, Sethupathi, 23, and her younger sister, Saranya, 12. They were residents of Pulliampatti village near Dharapuram in Tirupur, police said.
“Around 3pm on Tuesday, the trio along with Devi’s mother Annapoorani, 45, visited a temple near the canal as part of the birthday celebration of Saranya,” said a fire and rescue services department official.
Saranya slipped and fell into the water when she attempted to wash her feet. Her sister jumped into the water to rescue her. As both of them did not know swimming, Sethupati rushed to their help. But all three of them were washed away.
The body of Devi was recovered from two kilometres away from the spot. It was sent to the Tirupur Government Hospital for postmortem.
The Kamanaickenpalayam police registered a case.
