High school golf: Bishop Verot girls, Community School boys win Private 8 tourney titles

The Community School of Naples boys golf team edged Bishop Verot to win the Private 8 conference championship on Monday, Oct. 5, 2020 at Stoneybrook Golf Club in Estero.

The Community School of Naples boys and Bishop Verot girls golf teams showed off their depth to take their respective titles in the Private 8 tournaments at Stoneybrook Golf Club in Estero on Monday.

The Seahawks boys outlasted Verot by two strokes, 302 to 304, after CSN finished with a pair of birdies.

"It was the first time we've put one together as a team with this group of kids," CSN coach Tommy Donovan said. "They've all put together some great individual rounds. They've never put it together as a team."

The Verot girls were led by freshman Morgan Franklin, who edged out Community School eighth-grader Sydney Young for medalist honors by a stroke with a 73. The Vikings had three of the top five scores to roll to the crown.

"We had a good day," Verot coach Jeff Nixon said. "I mean, we didn't play our absolute best, but we had a good day. Morgan's just been sensational. This is her second title. She's a solid young player. We lost Gabby (Vetter) from last year's squad and replaced her with a fantastic freshman."

Sophomore Tommy Pezeshkan led the Seahawks, finishing second overall at even-par 72, and CSN had three in the top five and four in the top 10.

Verot sophomore Dalton Payne had a 2-under 70 to earn medalist honors. Evangelical Christian senior Bryce Craddock birdied two of the last three holes to finish third with a 74. First Baptist finished third behind a 78 from Ryan Kriz and a 79 from Chris Forsythe.

CSN sophomore Michael Stott tied for fourth with a 75, and teammate Nick Molloy, a junior, was sixth with a 76. Charlie Davis added a 79 to tie for ninth.

"The biggest thing was Charlie and Nick," Donovan said. "They asked me on 17 where we stood. I said a couple of birdies will be good, and they each made birdie on 18."

Verot sophomore Christian Allen tied Stott for fourth with a 75, but sophomores Kevin Kelly and Michael Bevins played their last 5 holes a combined 12 over. Kelly tied for ninth with a 79, and Bevins had an 80.

"We'll see them again at region, and it's going to be a battle," Donovan said of the Vikings.

Verot's Franklin had four birdies in her first 12 holes but was sidetracked by bogeys on four of her last six holes in her 73. Young bounced back from a 40 on the front to shoot a 2-under 34 on the back. Verot's Talia Rodino was third with a 75, and teammate Sarah Matkowski tied with First Baptist's Eva Lye for fourth with 77s.

Evangelical Christian edged First Baptist for third, 392 to 395, behind Alyssa Fritz's 79, which tied for sixth with CSN's Alayna Friedt.

"I think we're in a good place going into districts," Nixon said. "We've got some hard work ahead of us this week."
